The OMPE issues an alarm signal and calls for the urgent holding of general states on forest fires and their preservation!
A summer season that begins in flames!
Portugal: 100,000 hectares… That’s the area that has gone up in smoke in Portugal since the beginning of the year. A figure that has been rising steadily since the beginning of the fire that broke out on the night of 17 to 18 June 2017. And even if the final toll of this terrible fire has not yet been established, OMPE knows that lives, houses but also animals and a whole biodiversity will remain forever traumatized by this event.
In France: multiple outbreaks of fires in the South… Since April, there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of fires and, with the drought in many French departments, the risks have increased exponentially.
Today, beyond the assessment, the urgency is for SOLUTIONS!
For several months now, OMPE has been denouncing the total failure to take into account the serious dangers associated with forest fires. OMPE therefore sends a strong alarm signal and calls for the urgent holding of a general assembly on forest fires and their preservation, in the presence of OMPE and other NGOs, too often ignored and yet providing solutions.
Who can claim today that the drought rate and rising temperatures are not related to these events? The known consequences of these forest fires, such as the release of CO and CO2 into the atmosphere, but also the acceleration of global warming and the disruption of biodiversity, support and reinforce the warning signal that OMPE is issuing today.
We must therefore act NOW: OMPE calls on the French Government to urgently hold a general assembly on forest fires and on the UN, UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) to draw on the Green Fund to fund research NOW.
